Dilla Youth Day S.T.E.A.M. Maker Space event set to occur at The Charles H. Wright Museum on February 11, 2018.

Last year was very well attended, youth and community engaged extremely well and everyone learned some new useful information.

This event is now in it’s 7th year, and for the fourth year in a row with over 1000 attendees, We Found Hip Hop is partnering with The Charles H Wright Museum to celebrate Dilla Youth Day.

This day is a highlight during African American History Month for young people to become excited about exploring the S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) disciplines through the process of participating in and leading hands on engagement in fun educational activities while recognizing a modern homegrown figure in Hip Hop.

About J Dilla

J Dilla is a significant African American Musical Producer who created the genre Neo-Soul and revolutionized the sound of 90’s Hip Hop. He accelerated the careers of successful artists such as Erykah Badu, Common, Talib Kweli, DeLaSoul, Janet Jackson, and influenced many others up to our current generation.

How much does it cost the Youth?

NOTHING. There is no cost to youth groups who choose to participate. This is a wonderful opportunity to support Michigan’s young people. And it is a wonderful opportunity to promote the work of various community youth groups doing great work in the city to a very receptive 1,000 attendee audience of parents, educators, artists, community, and of course youth.

Participation can include but is not limited to one or more of the following:

Hosting a hands-on open workstation
Providing in-kind support
Providing financial support
Providing materials such as computers, arts supplies, sound equipment
Attending with your youth group
Volunteering
Promoting the event
Offering Media Services

Regarding Workshops:

What types of workshops are we looking for?

The event is organized into “spaces”.

• a Teen space 2pm-5pm in a classroom these are 60 minute & 90 minute focused instructional workshops.

• an Early Childhood learning space drop-in 1pm-5pm for children age 6 and under with hands-on making activities.

• an open multidisciplinary multi-age space 1pm-5pm in the multipurpose room with drop-in hands-on beat-making, design, and maker space activities.

• Electronic Keyboard Programming drop-in 1pm-5pm in the Orientation Theater.

• a movement/dance space in the Atrium 1pm-5pm with a dance floor and various open movement instruction in 30/45 minute intervals.

• and Youth Performances 6pm-8pm in the GM Theater.

Is there any compensation available?

there is no monetary compensation for organization participation, however we offer a meal and a free vendor table to organizations who wish to promote their organization and programming and do sign-ups.

Any particular theme outside of STEAM?

Yes, we concentrate heavy on The “A”= Arts so we welcome any engaging arts programming in all disciplines. We also concentrate heavy on the “E” = Engineering and super appreciate any low-tech or mechanical or Critical Thinking activities.

How much does it cost the Youth?

NOTHING. There is no cost to youth groups who choose to participate. This is a wonderful opportunity to support Michigan’s young people. Please help us bring this wonderful opportunity to 1,000 attendees on Dilla Youth Day–and then across Detroit.

This year we are honored to celebrate our 5th annual event on DILLA’s actual birthday (February 7th, 1974) and acknowledging the 10th Anniversary of his passing (Feb 10, 2006).

YOUTH WILL LEARN HOW TO MAKE BEATS!

Sonic Maker Space: In keeping with the DIY spirit of the Dilla style of Music Production, the culture of Mechanical Ingenuity of Detroit, & the removal of Arts & Culture from Public Education, How do we give more opportunities to young people to become makers and learn practical skills that can be applied to their own creative process? This event, based on the Disco Tech model is a fun, compelling hands-on program that will inspire young learners in the STEM disciplines.

(STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math) by connecting youth to technologies in order to help them realize the creative potential of cutting-edge hardware and software tools. Also, we’re connecting Detroit’s Best Music Producers & Community Leaders with youth to teach them not only the techniques and equipment but also the history of the Dilla Production Style in order to preserve this culture of Hip Hop.

Denim Day Detroit Returns to End Rape Kit Backlog

Detroit’s Hip Hop Community joins Enough SAID to End Sexual Assault with 2nd Annual Denim Day Detroit

For a second year in a row, Inspirational hip hop artist, MAHOGANY JONES is bringing Denim Day to Detroit in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month! This year’s event introduces a partnership with Enough SAID (Sexual Assault In Detroit) to again raise donations to help fund the processing, investigation and prosecution of Detroit’s +30 year rape kit backlog.

Last year’s free event successfully raised enough money to process one rape kit. This year’s goal is to raise at least $2,000, which thanks to the new labs processing the kits, is now enough to process 4 rape kits.

“Testing just one kit can solve and prevent multiple assaults,” Wayne Co. Asst. Prosecuting Attorney, Mary DuFour Marrow expressed in her email of thanks after attending last year’s event. “Please know we appreciate every penny!”

Denim Day is a global movement to end victim blaming and correct misconceptions surrounding sexual assault. It takes place the last Wednesday in April, sparked by a ruling of the Italian Supreme Court which overturned a rape conviction because they felt a teenage victim must have helped her rapist remove her tight jeans, thereby implying consent.

DENIM DAY DETROIT will again be free, however, we are asking supporters for donations of $5 of more, and inviting businesses to participate by wearing jeans and making a donation.

Realizing sexual assault is a heavy topic, DENIM DAY DETROIT will feature Music, Poetry, Talk Show – style Discussions, Self Defense, a Denim Photo Shoot and interactive activities designed to make people feel empowered and enthused about their involvement in ending sexual assault in Detroit. The after-work event will again be hosted by singer and activist, Consuela Lopez of BombaRica Cultural and Performing Arts.

Mahogany Jones is the force behind a CD compilation entitled PURE, Vol. 1 which celebrates women and addresses issues including sexual assault. The CD spawned A PURE Movement as a form of Hip hop activism focused on empowering women.

SASHA Center + Marygrove College collaborate to discuss Intimate Partner Violence!

On Monday, October 27, 2014 from 6-8pm join us at Marygrove College in the Main Dining Hall of the Madame Cadillac Building to hear a panel of men advocates discuss intimate partner violence.

Organizations that would like to have a free display table call 313-927-1484. Space is limited and we give priority to Domestic Violence and/or Sexual Assault agencies, no vending allowed, information only tables are available.

It is imperative that we provide opportunities for community members, students, staff, faculty and local organizations to get together and discuss intimate partner violence.

We use Domestic Violence Awareness Month to become aware of the impact of relationship violence within our communities. We also know that non-battering men can be very instrumental in stopping intimate partner violence if given the opportunity to share their stories and expertise in being non-violent in their own relationships and passing on their wisdom to other men.

Therefore, Marygrove College is hosting our annual Domestic Violence Awareness Month event for students, faculty, staff and the community to raise awareness, acknowledge survivors/victims of sexual assault/intimate violence and suggest solutions to the problem.

Our goal is to dispel myths and provide a forum with honest dialogue among ourselves-with men leading the way!
Special guests have been invited!!!

The Marygrove College Social Work Department, The Women’s Center, and SASHA Center will host a reflective evening to educate, inspire and provide support to survivors/victims/all persons affected by sexual assault and domestic violence.

ALL ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.

On our campus there will be Purple Ribbon Campaign, Domestic Violence Dinner Table Display and The Clothesline Project -honoring those lives that have been impacted by Domestic Violence for the entire month of October.

This is a coordinated activity for the purpose of engaging our students and community and supporting those who may be currently in a violent relationship or recovering from one.

Pillow Fight Oct 17 + 18

For this year’s PURE Purple event, we’re doing something completely different.

On Friday, October 17th, Mahogany’s PURE Movement is hosting a PURE Purple Soiree Masked Party at Drive Table Tennis Social Club. It’s more party then program and is really just a fundraiser for Handbags for Hope, a local nonprofit that serves domestic violence shelters around the Metro area.

On Saturday, PURE Movement and P.O.S.itive Native Initiative are hosting a Public Pillow Fight. The Pillow Fight is going to have more program-like features and we see The Foundation as one of the presenting organizations with POSitive Native and PURE Movement.

AND we’re looking for sponsors for everything. There’s 15% commission for anyone who sells a sponsorship package.

We’re asking pillow fight attendees to donate to the YWCA Interim House, the only domestic violence shelter in the city. At both events we’re asking people to donate used cell phones for Verizon Wireless HopeLine which provides free, prepaid cell phones for victims fleeing domestic violence. Both events are considered official cell phone drive events.
